Welcome to Pro-Trigger Golf, I’m Joe Bentley the inventor of the Pro-Trigger. I would like to share with you the secret of the golf swing, to show you how the Pro-Trigger works and how it is going to have you hitting the best golf shots of your life.
I will start by saying that much of what I am going to tell you today will probably go against everything you have ever learned as it pertains to the golf swing. But, it is absolutely true. The legendary golfer Ben Hogan once said “Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing”. What Ben Hogan was saying has been somewhat of mystery now for over 60 years, even to many of the best players and instructors.

You see, almost all golf instruction is centered around and for the intended purpose of “Swing-ing” the golf club. What Ben Hogan was talking about and what I am going to share with you today is the exact opposite of that. It is “Ball Striking” and it goes against everything that is commonly taught on how to swing the golf club.

The secret that I am going to share with you today is simple to understand and easy to learn. In addition, it provides the golfer with a distinctive advantage in timing and efficiency of motion. What does this mean? It means that by employing this simple secret you will achieve more distance, greater accuracy, and better consistency than ever before.
The secret that I am going to share with you today I extrapolated from Ben Hogan’s book ‘Five Lessons’. Please allow me to share with you the passages that lead me to this discovery.

"As he addresses the ball, the golfer creates the angle of the plane of his backswing: the plane inclines along this imaginary line running from the ball to the top of his shoulders and on upward at that established angle of inclination. If the golfer rotates his shoulders on this plane and swings his arms and club back on this plane – neither dropping them below the plane nor, what is much more disastrous, lifting them above the plane – then at the top of his backswing his left arm will be extended at an angle to the ball identical with the angle of the plane. In terms of functioning, which is more to the point, the shoulders, arms, and hands will be in the perfect position to carry out their interrelated movements on the downswing.
Learning to think in terms of this plane has helped tremendously to improve and stabilize the swings of many friends of mine. Like no other visual suggestion, it seems to induce a golfer to make the correct backswing movements TIME AFTER TIME. He folds the right elbow in, just as he should; his left arm is fully extended but not rigid, just as it should be; he completes his full shoulder turn; his hands cock themselves naturally, without any conscious effort, and the back of his left hand is an unbroken extension of the line of his left wrist and forearm. Not only are his arms and the upper part of his body correctly aligned throughout the backswing, but these various component parts tend to be poised TIME AFTER TIME with the proper degree of live, stretched muscular tension ready to be released on the downswing.” (page 86)

Let me draw your attention to the focal points of these paragraphs.  Because, it is not swing plane as is commonly thought of today.

“In terms of functioning, which is more to the point, the shoulders, arms, and hands will be in the perfect position to carry out their interrelated movements on the downswing.”

“Not only are his arms and the upper part of his body correctly aligned throughout his backswing, but these various component parts tend to be poised TIME AFTER TIME with the proper degree of live, stretched muscular tension ready to be released on the downswing.”

What Ben Hogan was talking about here is the very specific alignment created by the proper positioning of the shoulders, arms and hands relative to the body on the backswing necessary to produce maximum leverage during the downswing.  Everything Ben Hogan taught in ‘Five Lessons’ is for the sole purpose of creating and maintaining this alignment.  Swing plane is just a “visual suggestion” that he was using to try to communicate how to position yourself so as to put this proper leverage on the ball.  Swing plane, the path that the golf club travels relative to the ball, was never intended by Ben Hogan to be a goal of the backswing.  The goal was to get “…poised TIME AFTER TIME with the proper degree of live, stretched muscular tension ready to be released on the downswing.”

Interestingly enough, after working with the Pro-Trigger students will tend to score perfect or very nearly perfect on computerized swing analysis for Swing Plane!  You see, proper positioning of the shoulders, arms and hands on the backswing guarantees near perfect plane “TIME AFTER TIME”.  However, the opposite of this is not true.  The appearance of proper swing plane, by means of visual inspection of the path of the club relative to the ball, does not in any way assure proper alignment of the arms and hands relative to the body for maximum leverage.  Of course most golfers don’t care to know about all that anyway.  All they know is that they are hitting the best golf shots of their life!

So you see, the ‘Secret’ of the golf swing is the proper alignment of the arms and hands relative to the body for maximum leverage.

This is achieved by:

1. Gripping properly so as to establish the “Trigger”.

2. Lowering the arms down onto the chest to place the shoulders in the proper position.

3. Keeping the “Trigger” in between the shaft and the left shoulder during the swing.

4. And keeping the right elbow down in front of the right hip on the downswing.

How it works is:

1. When you begin to lower down and transfer your weight during the start of downswing

2.  You put weight on the “Trigger”

3. Which in turn pins the right elbow down in front of the right hip

4. Once this happens you ‘throw’ right from the top of the swing.

You can’t release too early.  You bodyweight and the force of your right arm straightening are working in conjunction to keep your right elbow pinned down in front of your right hip and your right wrist pinned back against the “Trigger”.  The release of the arms and hands must follow the natural unfolding of the right arm.  The golf swing is now being timed by the mechanics!  The act of hitting a golf ball becomes just as simple as throwing a ball or skipping a stone.  This is the secret to the golf swing!  This is the secret of the games’ greatest players!
